Orange County SR22 Insurance
For a variety of reasons some drivers can be flagged as “high risk” by insurance carriers, and as a result they are required to purchase an SR-22 document in addition to whatever insurance they already have on their vehicle. This document serves as proof that you are insured when operating your vehicle, but it is not required to drive legally unless you have been mandated by the Superior Court to have this proof of coverage. Many drivers will go their entire life without needing one, but if you have found yourself in a situation where you need to have an this proof of insurance, then it is imperative that you meet that requirement.

What is an SR-22?
This document proves that you have gone through the proper channels by purchasing at least the minimum amount of required auto insurance for you and your vehicle to drive legally in California. Because this document is not required for all drivers, drivers mandated to have one must have been deemed “very high risk” by insurance carriers.
An SR-22 is commonly confused with a specific type of coverage, but this is not the case. It is only the evidence of having an insurance policy, not the actual policy itself. The “SR” stands for “Safety Responsibility,” and this form is filed by your insurance company with the Department of Motor Vehicles. You are issued a second copy, and required to keep that copy in your vehicle at all times when driving.
Do I Need SR-22 Insurance for my Vehicle?
This evidence of insurance varies from state to state, but California residents are required for policyholders who have recently committed any of the following infractions:
- Driving without Insurance.
- Driving without a license, or with an expired license.
- Repeated traffic or legal offenses.
- Causing accidents while not having insurance, or not having adequate insurance to cover the damage.
- Most commonly, drivers who have been convicted of a DUI.

Where Do I Get My SR-22?

We have had thousands of clients request this service from us, and we are intimately familiar with the process of searching for the most affordable coverage, providing you with that coverage, and providing you proof of coverage via this proof of insurance document.
Does This Cost More Than Regular Insurance?
No, this proof of insurance does not cost more than any other form of insurance. What does end up costing our clients more is not the forum itself, but rather their driving history which has put them into the “very high risk” category that requires the proof of insurance.
Depending on which state you are located in, the cost can vary. Based our our experience, the filing fee for an SR-22 in Orange County generally costs somewhere around the $50 mark. Because this is only proof of insurance, and not the policy itself, this cost is added to the price of the actual policy. In other words, policyholders pay a one time fee for their proof of insurance and its filing fee, then monthly for their auto insurance, making the cost of their insurance the combined amount of the two prices.
How Long Am I Required to Have This?
Each particular case varies, but the amount of time that you are required to drive with your proof of insurance depends on the severity of the offense that you have committed. Because each person’s requirements are different depending on their offense, there is no general time requirement, but generally speaking drivers do not have to go for more than three years. On the shorter end of the spectrum and if your case is deemed less severe, you may not have to drive with your document for less than six months.
Once the State of California has deemed that you are no longer considered to be a ‘very high risk” driver, that stipulation will be removed from your driving requirements and you will be allowed to drive without it.
Moving to A New Place With SR-22 Insurance
If you were recently living in a state other than California and required to drive with this proof of insurance, you are not mandated to go through the process of obtaining new proof of insurance with the local California DMV. It is often the case that the state you previously moved from requires you to keep your document current, in which case our agent always recommends our customers err on the side of caution by calling us or the DMV to see if this the case for you.
Driving Without Your SR-22
If you have found yourself temporarily in a circumstance where you are required to keep an updated copy of this insurance document with you at all times when driving, then we cannot stress enough to you how important it is that you do so. If you are pulled over and found to be without this document for any reason, the resulting penalties can be severe, and can result in fines, suspension or your driver’s license, or loss of your driving privileges altogether.
